Northern New Jersey District Council of the Urban Land Institute announces the winners of its 2009 Land Use Awards
The Northern New Jersey District Council of the Urban Land Institute (ULI) proudly announces the winners of its 2009 Land Use Awards.
“The award winners exemplify ULI's mission to provide leadership in the responsible use of land and in creating and sustaining thriving communities. Each of the award winners has taken steps beyond industry norms to advance goals of smart and sustainable development. The winners show a commitment to successful development in New Jersey that is also mindful of societal goals” says Lawrence Jacobs, Esq., Chair of the ULI-Northern New Jersey District Council.
Anne Studholme, Esq., the Chair of the Awards Committee, adds “The perseverance shown by the recipients in the face of a more difficult economic climate than usual is particularly commendable.”
This year's award winners are:
- Project of the Year Award - The Beacon in Jersey City by Metrovest Equities.
The Beacon is the transformation of the former Jersey City Medical Center, a two-million square foot complex of historic art deco buildings. Metrovest Equities has created a new neighborhood with market rate housing and access to mass transit while restoring the beauty of the original construction.
- Infrastructure and Transportation Award – The Meadowlands Sports Complex Rail Link and Station by the New Jersey Sports and Exposition Authority.
The Meadowlands Station was an immediate success in providing tens of thousands of fans with car-free access to sports and entertainment. The success of the Meadowlands Station proves that New Jerseyans can and will use mass transit to travel to in state entertainment venues.
- Sustainable Development Award - 14 Maple Office Building and Dehart Street Parking Garage by the Morristown Parking Authority.
The 14 Maple Project shows that municipal structures can be at the cutting edge of "green" innovation while fostering town center commercial activity and pedestrianism.
- Outstanding Educator Award - Rutgers New Jersey Agricultural Experiment Station Office of Continuing Professional Education.
The Office is dedicated to educating real estate and development professionals to achieve a sustainable balance among the goals of human development, economic prosperity, and maintenance and enhancement of environmental quality. The seminars and conferences provide practical training that furthers goals of smart growth.
- Leadership in Public Policy Award - The Smart Growth Economic Development Coalition, NJEDA and the Legislative Sponsors of the 2009 Economic Stimulus Act.
The proponents of the 2009 Economic Stimulus Bill convened groups with diverse interests to give New Jersey the legislative tools to respond promptly and effectively to the economic crisis.
- The Edward J. Bloustein Award for Exemplary Achievement in Civic Leadership - Christiana Foglio.
ULI, in conjunction with the Bloustein School of Planning and Public Policy, is pleased to give the inaugural Edward J. Bloustein Award for Exemplary Achievement in Civic Leadership to Christiana Foglio for her energy and commitment as an involved alumnus of the Bloustein School. Ms. Foglio, through her numerous professional accomplishments, illustrates the ULI mission of leadership in land use and in creating and sustaining thriving communities.
