The firm's combination of clients, ranging from corporations with complex matters to individuals with smaller matters, provides the young associate with a unique opportunity for development. While assisting senior attorneys with complex matters, the young associate is given full responsibility for less complicated matters, often during the first year. Direct client contact comes early and often, and the opportunity for growth, as to both substance and complexity of matters, is not only available but is encouraged.
The firm is committed to developing the full potential of all associates. An Associate Training Committee concentrates on developing practical lawyering skills through a series of seminars conducted by partners and outside consultants, focusing on a variety of subjects ranging from "Clear and Concise Writing" to "Deposition Techniques" to "Negotiations."
Associate membership on several of the firm committees provides an opportunity for associates to express opinions and contribute to the operation of the firm. They are invited to sit on such committees as the Training Committee, Marketing Committee, Technology Committee and the Library Committee.
Because we believe that guidance is critical to growth, both formal and informal direction are components of our associate development program. Formal individual performance evaluations are designed to guide associates in recognizing strengths and identifying areas in which they have the potential for growth and development. Informal learning occurs as a result of frequent feedback and working with more experienced attorneys.
Attorneys work closely together and partners are readily accessible to converse with an associate on legal or personal issues. Many opportunities for interaction with partners, associates and other personnel within the firm arise on a regular basis through such activities as associate meetings, team meetings, monthly attorney luncheons and informal firm-wide parties.
